Born July 5, 1982, Derrick LaMonte’ Phillips, known as Young Mogul, grew up admiring such rap artists as Jay-Z, Jadakiss and the Notorious B.I.G. While growing up in the infamous 3rd Ward, rapping wasn’t an option, however, hustling was. As fate would have it, in 1997, Young Mogul met SK in an art class at Broad Ripple High School and the two immediately became inseparable. Young Mogul would go to the studio with SK and would watch as SK, and fellow group members Trajik and Conte, recorded songs for the Raww Dawgz album.
Young Mogul decided to try his hand in rapping, originally going by the name Lil Greedy. Soon after the start, Young Mogul was sent to prison. Young Mogul made use of his time by writing and working on his freestyle. Upon his release in 2004, Young Mogul started working on “We Are The Frontline”, a mixtape which as composed of remakes to industry beats. After recording, Young Gotti tried to create a buzz in late 2004, but that was short lived. In 2005, the Federal government indicted Young Mogul and the mixtape was shelved.
In 2006, SK worked on music from home and tried to help Young Mogul build his career once again. Young Mogul recorded the song, “I’m In The Club” which created a Young Mogul fan base while in prison. In 2010, SK was finishing up the album “Inferno”, under Game Face Entertainment, and featured Young Mogul, then known as Young Gotti, on the street banger “Who Needs Enemies” right before going back to prison.
Now signed to Divine Mind, Young Mogul foresees a promising future. Young Mogul made a promise to himself that he will never be behind prison walls again. Young Mogul plans to release the mixtape, “Reporting Live From A Federal Penitentiary” in late 2011 and will follow with the album, “Sex, Money, Drugz and Politics”. Young Mogul brings to the label is the street aspect; the hustle, the struggle, the glamour, the ups and downs of the game. Young Mogul has lived this lifestyle so the fans will learn about it through the perspective of a man that has been through it all.
